Township of John’s Island

#localpulseji #GCVB

  • John’s Island is one of the larger sea islands on the east coast and home to traditional indigenous cultures alongside Gullah and migrant cultures who have been the backbone of our local food production for generations. As it was developed by real estate mayors working for the City of Charleston in cooperation with wealthy Kiawah Island developers, the center part of the large island has been incorporated into the City limits. With that incorporation our tax dollars do little for John’s Island residents other than to continue to pay for City needs as they continue to vote to put over 80% of new housing for the City’s growth on our poorly managed roadways without making needed adjustments and improvements in a timely and respected way.

Some John’s Island residents have retained the very lawyer that finally won against the City of Charleston to liberate James Island into its own township. In accordance to his experience, we have several ways to accomplish a successful John’s Island township. This is critical in being able to make our own decisions about development, rather than allowing the City to continue to approve every new housing development that is proposed in their jurisdiction. As well as create our own process for how to best allocate taxes on this beloved, historic, food producing island.

  • +Raise $50,000 for legal fees to fight the city in court

+Collect all interested parties for township with their signatures, emails, and addresses in one document

+Include recognition of indigenous, migrant and Gullah culture and reparations = autonomous economic opportunities and tax breaks as part of township development process

+Work with John’s Island Council to spread the word and give updates at public meetings

  • Special thanks to local farms who recognize that we are working to ensure the integrity and future of this Gullah, migrant and farming community:

Lowland Farms, Vernan Smith Farms, Rosebank Farms, Legare Farms, etc.
