Mosquito Beach Historic District

#mosquitobeach #gcvb

  • Mosquito Beach is a nationally recognized historic district in direct correlation to freedman and indigenous settlements of the newly settled colonial Charles Town. It has roots tied to direct action for civil rights against the “white only” Folly Beach of the Jim Crow era and stands as the entertainment district of the Sol Legare community. Roots tied to every major leader and participant in Gullah life, civil rights as this place has hosted them all!!

This was the economic center for the Gullah diaspora in the 1950’s and retains its authenticity today through family ties and cultural significance.

The historic Blue Building will be updated without losing its character according to the family’s wishes and oversight.
